Annual fun tournament with village table tennis players

On a glorious autumn Friday evening 6th October, members took on the village table tennis club players for a fun tournament with plenty of food and drink for all to enjoy. Players ranged in age from teenagers to OAPs, from families to individuals, all had a great time.

The result was pretty irrelevant to many, with a win to the tennis club. But next year the table tennis club have an excellent chance of beating the tennis club players may be at table tennis !

Remembering Jean Porter

A very long standing member of our tennis club, Jean Porter passed away peacefully earlier this month following a long illness.

A service will take place at Slough Crematorium at 10:30am on Tuesday 5th September.

It will be followed by a service of thanksgiving for her life at St Giles’ church in Church Lane, Stoke Poges beginning at 12 noon.

A relative who is making arrangement for the services states in terms of dress  –

‘I think everyone should come as they see appropriate.        From my perspective: black tie or full colour makes no difference. It is an opportunity to celebrate the life force that was Jean. I will just be happy to see everyone there! Tartan brought a smile to my face. Her Scottish heritage was something Jean was particularly proud of.’

She contributed to the heritage of the village over many decades.
Originally from Slough, she lived in Stoke Poges since 1971 and was the local expert on the history of St. Giles’ Church. She had been a guider including being Brown Owl in Slough. Jean was a member and past President of the village WI, a Committee member of the Middle Thames Archaeological and Historical Society also a Vice-President of the Stoke Poges, Wexham and Fulmer Horticultural Society. Jean also worked as a volunteer Steward at St. Georges Chapel, Windsor.
She was a member of The Scot’s Society of St. Andrew, Slough, Eton and District where she enjoyed Scottish dancing. Jean enjoyed travelling and took some excellent photographs and won awards at another one of her clubs, the Stoke Poges Photographic Club.
Jean Porter, ALAM worked as a scientific civil servant at the Pest Infestation Laboratory, in Slough for many years but had always been interested in acting. She gained three diplomas in Speech, Acting and Verse Speaking from LAMDA and regularly participated in plays, pantos, revues and musical shows and recorded talking books and newspapers.
She was devoted to her two cats that were rehomed earlier this year after Jean was

A Summer update on Juniors – coaching, talent amd teams

We have run 4 Summer holiday Tennis Camps so far this Summer. Congratulations to all the tournament winners and player of the week players. We have handed out all sorts of prizes ranging from glass tennis player trophies, gold cups, signed Milos Raonic memorabilia, t-shirts, sunglasses, bags, grips and many more items.
We have received very positive feedback adn testimonials from parents of children attending our camps. Thank you for these.
As I am running most of the Summer Camps I am also talent identifying chidren for some advanced squads starting in September. At FCTC our 8/U team won the 8/U league and at Chalfont St. Peter Tennis Club our 9/U team came second in the league. We are now looking at improving our league positions in the older age groups, particularly the 12/U and 14/U age groups. If your child is this age I have been taking note of their standard and will be in touch if they are a high enough standard to take part in any of our advanced squads in September. Stoke Poges Tennis Club has some very good 12/U, 14/U and 16/U players and I would like to try to strengthen the clubs teams further.
At Farnham Common Tennis Club we are looking for a parent to assist with the clubs successful coaching programme. This parent would join the committee and work closely with me/the club to improve the various aspects the club and how we can offer a better service to the local commuity. FCTC is linked with many schools in the area, wer are looking at re-surfacing between 2-4 of our courts within the next 12 months, we are registered with the LTA, we are very active within the local community including Farnham Common Sports Club, and are doing very well for a club our size. We need to someone to come on board to help us grow further. If this is of interest please let me know. I will be sending a further e-mail within the next few weeks about this position but if you have any questions beforehand then please do get in touch.
Thank you.
